This is another Grandpa feeder knock off.  While some of the knock offs are as good or slightly better than the original Grandpa feeder, which is not really a recommendation, this product is slightly worse in our opinion.

Based on a deep dive into the 2-star, 3-star, and 4-star reviews (the “middle ground”), a different pattern of complaints emerges. Unlike the 1-star reviews which claim the product is “trash,” these reviews often say, “I want to like this, but I had to fix it myself.”

Even customers who gave the product a passing grade (3 or 4 stars) frequently reported these specific negative issues:

  • The “Loud Bang” Issue (Noise): A very common complaint in 3 and 4-star reviews. The metal-on-metal design creates a loud clanging sound when the lid closes.
    • Result: Chickens are terrified of the feeder and refuse to use it for weeks unless the owner modifies it with their own foam or rubber tape.
  • “Some Assembly Required” (Terrible Instructions): 3-star reviews frequently mention that the instructions are useless, missing steps, or refer to parts that don’t exist. Users often spend hours assembling it by guessing.

From the “positive” reviews:

  • Leaks & “Minor” Rust: Positive reviews often admit, “It keeps most rain out, but water still gets in the corners.” 4-star users often post photos of “minor” rust after just a few weeks, which they accept as “normal” for cheap Chinese steel, but is still a defect.
  • Sharp Edges (Safety): Even satisfied customers warn others: “Be careful during assembly, I sliced my finger.” They recommend wearing heavy gloves or filing down the edges yourself.
  • Wasted Feed: Several 3-star reviews note that while it stops rats, the chickens themselves still rake food out onto the ground because the “no-waste” lip isn’t high enough.

In the 2, 3, and 4-star categories, the pictures and videos tell a story of modification:

  • The “Duct Tape” Fixes: Many photos show the feeder covered in duct tape or foam weatherstripping. These users are showing how they had to “hack” the product to stop the loud banging noise so their chickens would use it.
  • The “Tarp” Solution: Photos show the feeder sitting under a user-built wooden roof or tarp. The caption usually explains that the feeder claims to be waterproof, but the user had to build a shelter for it anyway because it leaked.
  • Confusing Parts: Videos show users holding up extra screws or unidentifiable metal bars, asking, “Does anyone know where this piece goes? It wasn’t in the manual.”
  • Gaping Holes: Close-up photos show the lid closed, but with a visible 1/2-inch gap on the side—small enough for a mouse to squeeze through, defeating the purpose.

What I find really troubling about this feeder

DANGEROUS design, rusts immediately, and VEVOR support is a ghost town Rating: 1/5 Stars

Review: I get it, people purchase this VEVOR galvanized feeder hoping to save money on feed and keep pests out, but this product is a complete failure. Do not trust the “weatherproof” description—this item is not fit for outdoor use.

Design Flaws & Safety Hazards: The design is fundamentally dangerous for poultry. The metal edges are razor-sharp; people report that they cut their hand assembling it, and  chickens will cut their combs or eyes on the unrolled steel edges. The treadle mechanism is a joke. It is stiff and poorly calibrated, meaning smaller hens can’t open it, and when the heavy ones do, the lid frequently gets stuck in the “open” position—inviting every rat in the neighborhood to a free buffet.

Poor Quality Materials: “Galvanized” is a stretch. After just three days of rain, some feeders already have rust spots forming on the lid and hinges. The linkage arms that connect the pedal to the lid are made of soft, cheap metal that bends if a chicken steps on it too hard. Rainwater runs right into the feed hopper, turning 12 lbs of expensive feed into a moldy, clogged brick that you have to shovel out.

Horrible Customer Service: The worst part of these reviews  is VEVOR’s customer service. When contacted  to return a  defective unit, they refuse to send a prepaid return label. They insult customers with a $15 partial refund offer to “keep it” and fix it myself. When customers insist on a full refund, they stop responding to emails entirely.

So many negative things about this feeder. It isn’t mouse proof or rat proof.  Videos showing a single pigeon can use the feeder.  Cutting the customers and their chickens with the sharp edges. Even the lid is not actually fastened to the feeder, it can blow off during heavy wind.  As much as I like saving money, this feeder is just a waste of money.

Bottom Line: This is cheap, dangerous junk. Spend the extra money on a  reputable brand that actually works. This will injure your birds and waste your money.
