The company has a Facebook page were anyone can post a comment or review and there were dozens of customers posting positive comments about the product. No surprise as you will see the company’s Facebook ads on occasion so there is quire a following on Facebook. On occasion there will be a negative comment but usually from some smarty pants, I have yet to see anything negative from an actual customer. There were a few customers reaching out asking for help and either the company would answer or fellow customers would jump in with ideas for training or whatever was needed.
If you take the time to read the voluminous product website it has a really good story of how the feeder came onto the market. The guy had a small flock and was overrun with rats, didn’t have the kind of money that Grandpa feeders wanted for their product so he set about making his own feeder.
There is even a Backyardchickens.com thread that shows up in a Google search where the feeder basically evolved from a wooden feeder to a metal feeder. The guy put it up asking for comments and suggestions and you can read through the long thread and watch the product evolve over time from a simple plywood feeder into a galvanized sheet metal feeder that has pretty much taken over the market.
The thing about this feeder that takes some getting used to is the narrow treadle step. It looks like someone is saving a buck on materials but it makes sense once you think about it.
All the other feeders have these big wide steps for the chickens to stand on but as this is the only feeder that claims to be rat proof, heck they named it rat proof chicken feeder, it turns out that the narrow and far away step, more of a perch actually, does a good job of keeping the larger rats away. If a rat or large squirrel did get the treadle down it couldn’t reach the feed so there is a method to the madness.
At first my birds would perch with both feet and wobble around while eating but they learned to use one foot to hold the feeder down. I suppose if the treadle was allowed to bottom out it would be better but I was worried about litter preventing the treadle to go down so I mounted our feeder off the ground a bit.

A huge number of positive reviews on this feeder
An independent review from an article on egg economics
Another independent review from a customer
The feeder is made out of galvanized sheet metal and steel bar stock. The only wood is on the treadle, sort of a narrow perch more than a step. This feeder is unique in that it has an actual counterweight made from cement, attached to the treadle on the right side. The door has a marvelously sturdy steel axle that isn’t going to bend and because the axle is bent into a crank on the right side there is quite a bit of leverage for pulling the door open.

A review from a website called Root Simple
We were feeding a small tribe of roof rats, so I invested in a treadle feeder. We purchased – this one
The chickens (and the rabbit who lives with them) figured it out right away, and we buy much less feed. We also have much less rat droppings in the coop. The only downside to this feeder is that when the door swings shut it bangs. I’ve tried to put damping material in numerous spots on the door and elsewhere on the feeder, but haven’t succeeded in eliminating the noise. It’s not extremely loud, but loud enough to hear in the house if the windows are open – lets me know when the chickens are awake (on those days that they’re not squawking to let me know).
*(Manufacturers note: We do have the soft close door retrofit kit available as well as feeders packed with the soft close option)
